The Snow Sport Helmet Act passed all three readings in the provincial legislature last December and received royal assent on Dec. 15, 2011. It will go into effect in November 2012.
The act, which is the first of its kind in the world, requires downhill skiers and snowboarders of all ages to wear helmets.
Doctors Nova Scotia was consulted in the development of the act and supported the government’s efforts to further protect Nova Scotians from head injuries. Physicians supported the legislation as it has the ability to reduce head injuries and raise awareness about helmet safety.
The act ensures that anyone 16 or older wears a helmet, and that parents or guardians of people under 16 are responsible for ensuring they also wear a helmet. Ski hill operators are responsible to ensure signs are posted making users aware of mandatory helmet use. If an inspector sees a violation, the individual could face up to a $250 fine for each offence.
