Bill 55, which consisted of amendments to the Medical Act, received Royal Assent on Dec. 15, 2011, making it law in Nova Scotia.
The Medical Act gives the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) power to protect the public and investigate physicians to various degrees.
Doctors Nova Scotia and the Canadian Medical Protection Agency (CMPA) provided input to the college regarding the legislation when it was still in draft form. Both groups had concerns about protecting the public and patients and the rights of physicians to due process. They also wanted an open and transparent system of governance.
In June 2011, the Department of Health and Wellness, CPSNS, Doctors Nova Scotia and CMPA met to address the concerns. Changes were made to the proposed amendments based on these discussions. The updated Medical Act reflects revisions based on input from Doctors Nova Scotia and CMPA.
The amendments to the Medical Act will continue to protect patients and ensure they are receiving appropriate care.
