Training programs

Kids' Run Club is designed to make sure participants are ready and able to cover the distance of 2.14.2 or 5 kilometres by the day of a final run.

The key features of the training include:

  • Group runs
School groups train together a minimum of once a week leading up to participation in a youth run such as those at the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run or the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon.
  • Individual runs
Students run at least one other time on their own each week. Students should be sure to have a parent or guardian’s permission to run and follow the running safety tips. Individual runs can be exactly the same as the group run that week.
  • Warm ups
Starting all workouts with five minutes of brisk walking. This allows the body to warm up gradually and will help avoid getting an injury due to running with cold muscles.
  • Cool downs
Finishing all workouts with a few minutes of walking, going from brisk to more relaxed, allowing your body to cool down gradually.
  • Running log
All runs are documented in the running log, including comments on how each run felt as well as healthy snacks eaten that day.
  • Determination
Running takes hard work and determination. Push yourself when possible, go easy on yourself on bad days, and celebrate every day you are active.
  • Follow every run with stretching.
