Hockey Nova Scotia (HNS) is addressing the health issue of the consumption of energy drinks by young players.
HNS has teamed up with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, Addiction Prevention and Treatment Services of Capital District Health, and Doctors Nova Scotia to develop an approach and policy that addresses the use of energy drinks by young members.
The approach and policy will focus on awareness of the risk and harm to young people who consume these drinks; education for parents, coaches, and players on healthy energy alternatives; and prevention programs to keep energy drinks from the hands of young players.
“Physicians are pleased to see Hockey Nova Scotia taking a leading role in addressing this important issue,” said Dr. John Chiasson, President Doctors Nova Scotia.
“Energy drink consumption has been an area of concern for physicians for several years. High quantities of caffeine can lead to nausea, vomiting and heart irregularities,” he added.
HNS asks members to visit www.hockeynovascotia.ca, review the information, and provide input through means directed on the site. This input will contribute to final development of the policy which will be presented at the HNS annual general meeting in May. Feedback is requested by Thursday, March 15.
“Hockey Nova Scotia continues to strive toward the best health and safety practices for our players. We feel that the issue of energy drinks is pertinent and crucial to address. We are excited to be providing information and guiding healthy practices for our members,” said Randy Pulsifer, president Hockey Nova Scotia.
