Job description

The Professional Support Program (PSP) provides confidential assistance to health-care professionals struggling with issues such as anxiety, stress, burnout, family and relationship problems, psychiatric illness and substance use disorders. It serves the needs of medical students, residents, practising and retired physicians, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and family members.

Doctors Nova Scotia is looking for a PSP coordinator and a clinician to provide advice, peer support and assessments to determine what services will best meet each client’s needs. The coordinator and clinician also provide information about and recommendations to other services, such as private psychologists and counsellors, community support groups and residential treatment programs.

Coordinator

Job description:

  • Maintain up-to-date information about PSP services
  • Chair PSP Advisory Committee
  • Conduct activities that promote health and wellness
  • Provide educational activities such as lectures, hospital rounds, workshops and webinars
  • Plan programs and services
  • Liaise with stakeholders including CPSNS, CMPA, Dalhousie PGME and UGME
  • Represent Nova Scotia at the Forum of Canadian Physician Health Programs (CMA)

Requirements:

  • Actively practising medicine in Nova Scotia
  • Insured by CMPA
  • Able to spend at least half a day (up to a full day) per week in the office at Doctors Nova Scotia

Clinician

Job description:

  • Assess clients either in person or by phone to determine specific needs
  • Provide peer counseling around common issues such as stress, occupational issues and burnout.
  • Maintain records in confidential database
  • Manage cases of patients with complex issues (that is substance use disorders)
  • Provide information about and recommendations to other services such as private psychologists and counsellors, community support groups and residential treatment programs. 
  • Facilitate referrals to psychiatrists and addiction medicine specialists

Requirements:

  • Actively practising medicine in Nova Scotia
  • Insured by CMPA
