Membership category changes

Members can request a change in membership category to accommodate life and career changes. In many cases, a category change can result in a membership dues reduction.

Membership category change requirements

Do you wish to change to a:

  • Full member
This is most common for residents who are currently Doctors Nova Scotia members beginning their full practice or members returning from leave. Full membership dues are pro-rated on a quarterly basis. Physicians joining Doctors Nova Scotia part way through the association’s fiscal year are asked to contact the association for the amount owing.
  • Resident
For current Doctors Nova Scotia student members beginning their residencies in Nova Scotia.
  • Member-on-leave/Special consideration
For members taking time from their practice for parental leave, continuing medical education, or for disciplinary reasons.
  • Retired member
To qualify for retired membership status, a physician must retire his/her licence. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia must confirm your licence status to process this change.
  • Non-resident member
Members must either cancel their medical licence in Nova Scotia or change to a non-resident licence status and live outside of Nova Scotia to be considered a non-resident member.

*All requests are subject to approval.
