Organizational structure

Doctors Nova Scotia's top position and spokesperson is the President, who serves a one-year term and is selected by the general membership at the annual conference in the spring.

Dr. John Chiasson is the current President, with President-Elect Dr. John Finley preparing to assume the role in June 2012.

The association is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors made up of a group of physicians that provides overall strategic direction. The Board is structured to offer the broadest representation since Doctors Nova Scotia membership includes general practitioners and specialists practicing throughout the province. There are also representatives for residents and medical students.

Board of Directors members serve one or three-year terms. The majority are elected through a member-wide election, which takes place in April of each year. Three members are appointed by the Board of Directors to help ensure optimal geographical representation.

The association also has sections, which consist of physicians who share a professional interest (i.e. part of a sub-specialty). These groups are often called upon to provide the association with input for negotiations as well as to act as spokespersons should the media seek an opinion for a specific area of expertise.

Doctors Nova Scotia’s staff is led by chief executive officer Nancy MacCready-Williams. The association’s corporate office is divided into four departments: Member and Corporate Services, Information Technology, Healthy Policy and Economics, and Communications.
