Facts for Youth

  • Every 13 seconds someone in the world dies because they smoked.

  • Smoking causes plaque and tarter build up on the teeth, as well as increasing chances of gum disease and losing teeth.

  • Approximately 1,500 kids are killed each year in house fires caused by cigarettes.

  • Most people start using tobacco before they finish high school. If you can make it out of high school without smoking, you’ll probably never smoke.

  • Even after one cigarette, you’ll be short of breath and less able to run.

  • Second-hand smoke contains more than 50 cancer-causing chemical compounds. That’s not maybe; it’s proven.

  • Two-thirds of smoke from a cigarette goes into the air around the smoker for others to inhale.

  • Regular exposure to second-hand smoke increases the chances of getting lung disease by 25 per cent and heart disease by 10 per cent.

  • This year, approximately 1,600 Nova Scotians will die from smoking-related illnesses and 200 will die from exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke.

  • Cigarillos are just as dangerous as cigarettes.
