Who We Are and What We Do
Doctors Nova Scotia is the professional association representing all physicians in the province. It also has the honour of being the oldest medical
association in Canada.
There are over 3,500 members in total. The membership includes practicing physicians, retired physicians, medical students and residents.
To enhance the quality of health care and life for Nova Scotians, Doctors Nova Scotia:
-
Educates the public on the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, including:
-
Offers its school-based provincial Youth Running for Fun program
- Keeps Nova Scotians informed on important health-care issues; and
- Provides input on health-care policies and legislation (i.e. smoke-free legislation and
banning cell phones while driving).
To serve its membership, Doctors Nova Scotia:
- Acts as the profession’s united voice on health-care issues to the public, health-care stakeholders and government;
- Offers members information and programs to support them throughout their careers;
- Negotiates physician remuneration with government;
- Influences and supports the development of health-care policies; and
- Offers a comprehensive package of benefits and services.
The association doesn't have disciplinary powers over doctors. This is the role of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, the professional body responsible
for licensing doctors and regulating the province’s medical profession.
Doctors Nova Scotia is a division of the Canadian Medical Association.
