Dr. Jane Brooks
Doctors Nova Scotia President
June 2010-June 2011
President's Profile
Dr. Jane Brooks was born in England and moved to Middleton with her family when she was 12 years old.
After graduating from high school, she pursued a Bachelor of Science (honours in biology) and a PhD in microbiology and immunology from Dalhousie University.
She earned her medical degree from Dalhousie in 1997 and completed a family medicine residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She then returned to
Middleton to work as a fee-for-service, full-scope family doctor doing ER shifts for eight years.
For the past three years Dr. Brooks has been working in a collaborative practice with her husband Dr. Eric Balser, two nurse practitioners, a family practice
nurse and a dietician.
Dr. Brooks became involved in the association in 2003. Since that time she has served on several working groups and committees, including chairing the
newly-designed GP Section. For the past six years Dr. Brooks has been a member on the Doctors Nova Scotia Board of Directors.
Dr. Brooks’ priorities for her term include increasing the role of physicians in the development of health policy, working with government to address system
wide health-care issues, and improving member engagement in the association. Dr. Brooks, who has worked in emergency departments, eagerly awaits Dr. John
Ross’s report on emergency care in Nova Scotia.
In what little spare time she has, Dr. Brooks enjoys going to the gym, getting out for long bike rides, gardening, and spending as much time as possible with
her two sons and husband.
