Regular Pap Tests

Almost all cervical cancer is preventable if cell changes are detected early enough. Even though it's preventable, Nova Scotia has one of the highest rates of cervical cancer in the country. Every year in Nova Scotia approximately 55 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. For those diagnosed there is a 50 per cent chance of surviving the disease.

A Pap test is an important screening test which shows changes in the cells of the cervix that could lead to cancer. The cervix is the opening to the uterus. During a Pap test cells are taken from the cervix for examination.

This year Pap Test Awareness Week is Oct. 24-30 with the goal to raise awareness and educate Nova Scotians about cervical cancer.
