Doctors’ Fees

Nova Scotia’s health-care budget for 2008-2009 is estimated to be $3.2 billion. About 20 per cent of this money will go to physician services. The other 80 per cent will be used for other health costs such as hospitals, medical equipment, laboratories, home care, nurses and other health-care providers.

Most of a doctor’s pay comes from the provincial government. There are many factors that determine what a doctor earns. The number of patients and the care provided (i.e. specialization) are two major factors that affect a doctor’s earnings.

In Nova Scotia, most doctors are paid through fee-for-service or alternative funding.
